De Gelderse Poort
Said to be a fascinating river landscape, De Gelderse Poort is a magnificent area of natural beauty with lateral moraines, reed swamps, river dunes, forest swamps and meadows. Bird watchers will come into their own as this area is home to numerous species of bird.
National reserve
Stretching over thousands of hectares, De Gelderse Poort is a unique model area
showing how a nearly uninterrupted nature reserve can be home to many different
species of plants and animals. Water is important in De Gelderse Poort. After
all, the town of Rijnwaarden is not called “The Gelderland Island” for no
reason. The river has a noticeable influence on this area. Millingerwaard and De
Gelderse Poort are both nature reserves. With more and more footpaths and
bicycle tracks opening up this area, it is ideal for keen walkers and
cyclists.
Curiosity
Of course you need not stay in the countryside. There are
enough interesting places to visit and enough attractive restaurants to go to
for a lovely meal. You can visit the beautiful exotic Millinger Theetuin
(teagarden) and the wonderful Huis Aerdt, which is a place of interest in its
own right but where you will find much more to see. Events such as the flower
market in Huissen are also worth visiting.
