Traffic
Dutch traffic can be busy at times but it generally moves in an orderly fashion. It is good to know the most important traffic rules.
Rules
Cyclists and pedestrians are well protected in Dutch traffic, as they have the right of way, much more so than in other countries. Read more about Dutch traffic rules
Maximum speed
The maximum speed limit for Dutch motorways is 120 kilometres (about 70 miles) per hour, you may drive 80 kilometres per hour outside built-up areas and 50 kilometres (30 miles) per hour for inside built-up areas. Some residential areas have restrictions to slow down traffic.
Fines
Dutch police carry out a lot of announced and unannounced road traffic surveillance. Police often take up concealed positions for the surveillance of road users. Maximum fines can be as high as several hundreds of euro.
Alcohol
The maximum blood alcohol level allowed is .05 percent. If you're younger than 24 years and drive a moped or only have your driving licence less than five years, the maximum level allowed is .02 percent, which in fact means that you can only have non-alcoholic drinks.
