Good to know
Bicycles, drugs, traffic rules and where and when to shop. This section contains information about the Dutch and the Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region.
Traffic
Dutch traffic can be busy at times but it generally moves in an orderly fashion. It is good to know the most important traffic rules.
The Dutch and their bikes
Just about every Dutch person has a bicycle. It is an easy and fun means of transport for checking out the Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region.
Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
The Netherlands is well known for its tolerant drug policy. What is and what is not allowed? A number of new regulations on alcohol and tobacco have been introduced.
A bridge too far
To many tourists, the city of Arnhem is inextricably linked to Operation Market Garden, where the bridge at Arnhem proved ‘A bridge too far’. This dramatic airborne landing operation was carried out in 1944 and a world-famous film was produced in 1977 that was shot in the Region.
The struggle against the water
Luctor et Emergo is Latin for ‘I struggle and emerge’. It is the motto of the Dutch province of Zeeland but actually applies to the whole of the 'Low Countries'.
Religion
The church has been losing ground in the Netherlands. Half of the Dutch population describes themselves as ‘having no religious affiliation’. The majority of people who are indeed church members only rarely visit their church. A growing number of people believe that there is ‘something’.
Telephones and the Internet
Ringing home on your mobile telephone may turn out to be rather expensive when you are in a foreign country. Accepting a call from home may often turn out to be even more expensive. There are easy solutions to keep the phone costs down. And of course you can always e-mail someone.
