How to get around in the Region?

A bus, train or taxi will quickly get you to any location in the Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region. A car provides you with the opportunity to move around a lot. Another great option is to simply rent a bike and enjoy your short or longer stay.

Public transport

Train

It only takes a quarter of an hour for the train to get you from Nijmegen to Arnhem, or vice versa for that matter. Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region has a large number of train stations.  These stations are closely connected to an intricate network of busses allowing you to go to any place in the Region.

Bus

National bus cards will allow you to travel in a bus or trolley throughout the Netherlands. Depending on the distance you have to travel, the bus conductor will stamp your card. If you want to, you can also do this yourself by using the yellow stamping machine located in the bus.

Bus cards can be obtained with 2, 3, 8, 15 or 45 'strips'. The bus driver can only sell you bus cards containing 2, 3 or 8 strips. You can buy the other bus cards at railway stations and TNT-post offices, book shops, magazine shops, tobacconist's shops and supermarkets.

There is a separate pink over-65 bus card for senior citizens allowing them to travel at reduced rates.

Other passengers are best off with a day pass that will allow them to go everywhere in the Netherlands for the entire day. In the city, the 8-strip-card functions as a day pass. Throughout the rest of the Netherlands, two 8-strip-cards are valid as a day pass. The bus driver will stamp the ordinary 8-strip-card in a special manner for this purpose.

Good to know

The driver will stop at a bus stop once you have indicated that you want to get out. You can let the bus driver know this by pushing one of the buttons located between the windows or near the doors. The driver will also always stop when someone is waiting at the bus stop.

The 9292ov van-deur-tot-deur routeplanner will allow you to plan your travels by train and bus - or even ferry - precisely the way you want it from door to door.

From door to door: the (city region) taxi

There are various taxi companies in Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region. You can order a taxi by phone, flag it down on the street or get in at a taxi rank. All taxis have a clock that they will use. The maximum beginning rate is 7.50 euro, which includies the first two kilometers. Each subsequent kilometer will be at a maximum rate of 2.20 euro.

As a supplement to the public transport service Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region has its own taxi system: the city region taxi. The Region taxi will bring you from door to door, is cheaper than regular taxis but more expensive than buses. Fellow passengers may join you for the taxi ride.

You can order a city region taxi by phone: 0900-7344682 or at the website (Dutch only) Reservations can be made within a time frame of between 1-4 hours before departure. The city region taxi is available 7 days a week, from 8 am until midnight; on Friday and Saturday evenings you can even travel until 2 am. The taxi will only drive within the city region and a small area around the city. There is a 30-minute margin between the time agreed and actual time of departure.

Car

A car will take you anywhere you like. Parking your car in the city, however, can be a bit of a problem.
You can park your car in the city centre at specific parking places or in one of the cark parks. For more information on parking in the cities, please visit the web site of Arnhem (only in Dutch) or Nijmegen. Please make sure that you do not park your car where this is reserved for permit holders.

Parking in smaller villages is often free of charge and much more simple. Where this is indicated by sign posts you need to use a parking disc. If you do not have such a disc, then you can buy one at the petrol station.

Inexpensive parking places in the Park&Ride

Park&Ride Gelredome is located in the south of Arnhem. For 2.50 euro per day you can park your car and travel by bus to innercity Arnhem. North of Nijmegen near Ressen (N125) is also a P&R. Parking only costs 2 euro per day.

Cycling and walking

When you cycle or walk you see and enjoy so much more. Dutch people cycle a lot, in the city as well as in nature. They also like to walk through nature. Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region has an excellent network of bicycle paths and routes and there are plenty of walking opportunities.

Villages and cities are well adjusted to cyclists and pedestrians. They have extensive auto-free zones for pedestrians; wide, well-lit pavements; pedestrian refuge islands; clearly-marked zebra crossings; and pedestrian-activated crossing signals. There are many separate cycle lanes, both in urban areas and outside the cities.

You may bring your bicycle with you in the train outside rush hours for six euro. You can rent a bicycle at the major train stations in Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Please ensure your bicycle is well-locked when you leave it unattended. Lock it or lose it is a saying that applies to all major cities in the Netherlands.
