Radboud Hospital detects the cause of visual impairment

expired

Researchers of St Raboud University Medical Centre have found the genetic cause of a hereditary form of visual impairment. They used a revolutionary but relatively fast and cheap DNA technology (Next Generation Sequencing) to map out this hereditary form.

Research time was reduced from two years to two weeks. The researchers believe that this is a revolution in genetics.

Hereditary visual impairment results from a deficient building of blood vessels in the retina of the eye. This may eventually lead to retinal detachment, visual impairment or blindness.
