O-p-a design meeting on sustainability

expired

For the coming 'ontwerpcafé' (design meeting), O-P-A, the Arnhem platform for designers, aims to find out the influence that design and designers (may) have on sustainability in these times of change. What does sustainability mean for the field of design? How obvious is sustainable design really? During the meeting, experts will provide an answer to all these questions.

During this first 'ontwerpcafé' meeting, centred around this year's theme of sustainability (2009-2010), special attention will be paid to the history of views of sustainability and sustainable design. Contrary to popular belief that sustainability is something of the 21st century, it has a wealthy past, which is reflected by the many initiatives that have become either a success or a failure.

There is much to be said on sustainability these days. Everyday again people get inundated with urgent calls to go for sustainable entrepreneurship, sustainable investments, a sustainable construction industry and the creation of a sustainable society. According to many, the beliefs of the past are no longer valid. It has become outmoded to believe that the earth has not enough resources. We need to look at things in their right perspective. As Gandhi once said: "Mother earth has plenty for our needs but not for our greed." It is humankind who has created scarcity by misusing the earth's resources.
