Learning Dutch
Fortunately the Dutch often speak English and German quite well, but if you decide to come and live here, it is always wise to learn the language.
Language centres
The language centre at Radboud University offers Dutch language courses to anyone, including people with a lower level of education.
Information about facilities for self-study and (conversation) lessons:
- Eurolinguist language school, located close to Nijmegen, offers various Dutch language courses.
- In Arnhem Elycio talen offers Dutch language courses, both individually or in groups.
- Taleninstituut Jeroen Bosch offers special courses Business Dutch. Also Dutch telephone and correspondence customs are part of the course. To a large extent the courses can be taken via internet, which allows you as an expat to come to the Netherlands prepared.
Speaking Dutch
Gilde Nijmegen is a voluntary organization dedicated to the transfer of knowledge. It brings together volunteer helpers (often people over 50) and people with another mother tongue who want to improve their Dutch and get to know Dutch culture better. The helper and the learner meet once a week to chat about anything and everything. You do need to be able to speak a bit of Dutch.
The Volksuniversiteit Arnhem offers Dutch fluency courses to foreigners who already have a basic knowledge of the language.
