Cool Region wants Gyro Gearlooses

Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region wants Gyro Gearlooses. In fact, the Region intends to develop into one of the most innovative regions in the Netherlands.

To achieve this, secondary and higher educational institutions must graduate no less than 20 per cent science and technical students in 2015 than is presently the case. That is why Cool Region called the B4You Project into being.

In the B4You project [Science4You’], educational institutes, the authorities and the business community in the region all work together. In April 2008 they officially agreed that they will sell off technology in an attractive way.

For example, they want to kindle enthusiasm for technology in young children and have more teachers in class for science and technological subjects. Students must be able to move on easily to higher education. To achieve this, education must be practical and attractive. And science technicians must cooperate better. All this is required because there is an increasing demand for technical knowledge-intensive jobs.

A nice example is the High Tech Challenge. It is a technical contest for students of the second and third year of higher general secondary and pre-university education. Twelve schools and twelve companies participated in the 2008 edition. The two hundred students had to build a programmed high-tech robot (a bioloid). They were coached by technical students of the HAN University.

The 2008 High Tech Challenge award was captured by Stedelijk Gymnasium Nijmegen with a super robot which could do three press-ups followed by a headstand.
