Recreatieoord De Panoven

Holiday resort ‘De Panhoven’ is located on a very well conserved industrial heritage site and dates back from 1860. The Panhoven offers the possibility to experience the ancient craft of firing brickworks and roof tiles and, in a way, become one with nature. The kiln was transformed with great respect to its special heritage and now holds, among other things, the first museum for roof tiles and brickworks in the Netherlands which will surely capture your imagination.

The process of clay mining has brought special biocenoses in and around the clay ponds. Zevenaar already had a state brick kiln when the place received its city rights in 1487. The city of Nijmegen was its customer and we know that Nijmegen bought roof tiles in Zevenaar in 1538. Other people living in “de Liemers”, the area around Zevenaar, also began firing roof tiles and bricks in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries,.

In the nineteenth century, more and more kilns were built around Zevenaar, including the Panhoven, which was built in 1850. The Panhoven had many different owners but Wim Kruitwagen’s father took charge of Panhoven in 1921 and bought the kiln in 1930. The tradition of the brick-making craft by this family goes back almost three centuries.

Although the kiln fires were extinguished by Wim Kruitwagen in 1982, the present owners Wim and Erna Kruitwagen felt it important to preserve the heritage for the public and to experience the old craft of baking bricks and tiles. The premises also hold the first Dutch roof tile and brickworks museum. Various recreational activities are organized, either for a day’s visit or for a longer stay. They also run a restaurant and offers possibilities for your wedding location.
