The municipality of Doesburg
Doesburg, located where the three provinces Achterhoek,
Veluwe en Liemers meet, is widely known for its beautifully restored historic
city centre and fortifications. Furthermore, because of its location by the IJssel and the Oude IJssel, Doesburg manifests itself as
city by the water. The people of Doesburg literally and figuratively know
“where to find the mustard” (well-known Dutch saying for: “to know one’s
beans”), that is, in Doesburg itself! The many visitors of the Mosterdmuseum [Musterd Museum] bring a jar of traditional
mustard home with them. Doesburg is well-known for its beautifully restored
city centre and fortifications. Few cities in the Netherlands have a medieval street
pattern which is still as completely intact.
That Doesburg is not a sleepy little town, is proven
by its annual recurring festivities, such as:
- Buitenbeeld Doesburg [Off-screen Doesburg], a colourful summer festival set in a beautiful ambiance which this year will be held in the city centre of Doesburg. A wonderful combination of film, fashion and dance.
- Culturele Zondagmiddag [Cultural Sunday Afternoon] takes place from 12.00 p.m until 17.00 p.m on the first Sunday of the month. A free programme along studios, museums, antique dealers, etc.
- Doesburg Binnenste Buiten Braderie [Doesburg Inside Out Fair]: in the second week of July the largest free event with street theatre and music in the Achterhoek takes place in Doesburg.
- The fun fair is held each year from Thursday afternoon until Sunday evening after the last Wednesday in June.
- Open Monumentendag [Heritage Day]: for years the
second Saturday of September in Doesburg has been dominated by Open
Monumentendag. With over 100 monuments Doesburg is a phenomenal tourist
attraction.
