The municipality of Rijnwaarden

Rijnwaarden is a beautiful rural district situated in the east of the Netherlands. It has six ‘church villages’ of which Lobith is the most well-known village. The river Rijn immediately springs to mind when you think of Lobith. The other villages are: Aerdt, Herwen, Pannerden, Spijk and Tolkamer. The district has a population of 11,000 and covers an area of around 5,000 hectares.

Rijnwaarden is a district with a lot of space, water and tranquillity. It is right in the middle of the ‘Gelderse Poort’, a wetland area that will soon become a protected area of ecological value. There is a flourishing club life in Rijnwaarden. Various events are organised all year long, not just for members and residents of Rijnwaarden but visitors too are very much welcome.

The area is a ‘must’ for nature lovers. Cycling on wonderful paths from Tolkamer to Herwen through the Ossenwaard and Geuzenwaard nature reserves, along the Oude Rijn, the former summer bed of the river Rijn. You can walk across idyllic dike roads through an ancient-old river landscape with the Montferland lateral moraines around Nijmegen in the background. The famous long distance walk Pieterpad will take you from Pieterburen in the province of Groningen to the Pietersberg in the province of Limburg and goes from Elten via Spijk, Tolkamer and the Bijland through the district to Millingen aan de Rijn.

If you want to go sightseeing, please visit the 17th century Huis Aerdt, located just below Herwen, which was once the house of the illustrious and noble Van Hugenpoth tot Aerdt family. A foundation (Stichting Vrienden van de Geldersche Kasteelen) is now in charge of the house which has a visitors’ centre for the Gelderse Poort.

Tolkamer offers an attractive view on the River Rijn where you can see the spectacle of boats sailing up and down the river. At this point, just before the River Rijn splits up into the Nederrijn and Waal rivers, it is one of the most busiest river routes of Europe. A terrace on the Europakade is a wonderful spot to witness this spectacle. Tolkamer also has the De Bijland aquadrome, a lake of over 250 hectares, with plenty of recreational opportunities for swimmers, fishermen, windsurfers, sailors, cabin cruisers, as well as sun-worshippers.

To put it briefly, Rijnwaarden has a lot to offer: a wonderful living environment for its inhabitants and a pleasant and relaxed stay for visiting tourists.
