The municipality of Rheden
The municipality of Rheden meanders like a ribbon from west to east. It consists of seven villages: the larger centres of Velp, Rheden and Dieren and the smaller villages of De Steeg, Ellecom, Spankeren and Laag Soeren. It has a population of around 44,000 and covers a total area of 8,439 hectares.
Nature and landscape
Rheden has one of the most varied and unique landscapes of the Netherlands. Water, forests and moorland, there is plenty of it. Well-known areas of ecological value are the Posbank and Onzalige Bossen, which are part of the Veluwezoom National Park that covers an area of 48 km². You can not only enjoy the thick and sometimes dark forests but also vast, open moors. There are enormous differences between high and low areas, resulting in spectacular views. The River IJssel, the Apeldoorn Channel and the streams and springs are the blew ‘vains’ running through the municipality. The unique contrast between the lateral moraines in the forest-rich hills of the Veluwe area and the flat IJssel valley make it very attractive to work and live in, as well as very suitable for recreational purposes.
Recreation
Due to the many sports and recreational opportunities, you can enjoy everything the municipality has to offer for an eternity. Take a ride on the steam train, make a boat excursion on the river IJssel or spend a day in the swimming pool of Rheden. You will find a ferry in Dieren and Rheden that will take you across the river IJssel. Of course, you can also discover the area by bicycle, on foot or on horseback.
Rheden has several hotels, camping sites and Bed & Breakfast addresses. If you want to know where all the different events take place and when, please go to the municipality website of Rheden (only in Dutch and English)
