The city of Nijmegen

The oldest city of the Netherlands

Nijmegen lies in the east of the Netherlands, close to the German border, 56 kilometres from Airport Weeze. Through its unique situation on a lateral moraine on the river Waal, it has been a favourite location for residents and visitors for 2,000 years, in fact since the era of the Batavians and Romans. Nijmegen is therefore the oldest city in the Netherlands.

In Nijmegen, past and present go hand in hand. You can experience it yourself. Like the Romans, high up in Valkhofpark you can admire the Dutch river landscape stretching out in front of you. The city is surrounded by a uniquely varied, natural environment of woods, moors, water, hills and extensive polders with meandering dykes.

Admire too the historic buildings on the Grote Markt, or wander over the Waalkade along Europe's busiest waterway. Discover Roman finds and modern art side by side in Museum Het Valkhof. Visit extraordinary boutiques in historic buildings and trendy shops in the modern two storey Marikenstraat. Or enjoy the lively nightlife.
Nijmegen offers something for everyone. Visit the city and be in for a surprise!

What you mustn't miss:

  • the historic Valkhofpark, Hunnerpark and Kronenburgerpark;
  • the St. Stevenskerk from 1254 (climb the 67 metre high St. Stevenstoren for a unique panorama!);
  • the nine museums, including Museum Het Valkhof (with many Roman finds) and the bicycle museum Velorama;
  • the Commanderie van St. Jan (from 1196) with coffee-roasting house, distillery and brewery;
  • the Waalkade, with the casino and various restaurants and cafés on the river bank;
  • numerous shops in historic buildings and modern architecture;
  • international films, debates and theatre in artplex LUX;
  • plays, concerts and opera in De Vereeniging concert hall or the city theatre;
