The municipality of Mook en Middelaar

Hills, forests and moorland

The municipality of  Mook and Middelaar is the most northern municipality of the province of Limburg and consists of the centers of Mook, Middelaar, Molenhoek and Plasmolen. It has a population of over 8,000 and is often referred to as the bridge between the river Maas and the ‘hilly country’.

The hills, forest and moorland make large parts of the municipality a special nature area that is wonderful for walking and cycling. The area is currently connected to the Veluwe, Noord-Brabant and Noord-Limburg areas by a network of some 1,000 kilometers of signposted bicycle routes. Those who want to enjoy peace and quiet and wonderful views should pay a visit to Mookerschans, Heumense Schans or the Zandberg nature park. Those who love watery areas will find ample recreational opportunities at De Maas and Mookerplas. Mookerheide, a private estate and hunting seat located at the Heumensebaan in Molenhoek is worth visiting because of its architecture, location and ambiance.

The municipality of Mook and Middelaar has a rich and fascinating history. Mook is primarily known for the Battle on the Mookerhei that took place on 14 April 1574, when Prince William, founder of the House of Orange-Nassau, revolted against the King of Spain. There is a legend dating from this period. It is the legend of Kiste Trui, born in Middelaar, who is said to have been unsuccessfully searching and digging for the treasure-chest of the Orange’s army until the very day she died. Other places of interest include Roman remains and an old water mill from 1725, both located in Plasmolen.
