The municipality of Millingen aan de Rijn

Millingen aan de Rijn [Millingen by the Rhine] is located between the Nijmeegse Heuvelrug, the river the Rijn [Rhine] and the German border. The German city Kleve is located at approximately ten kilometers distance and Nijmegen at fifteen. Millingen aan de Rijn is located beautifully on the delta of the Rhine and the Waal.
From the Rijndijk the visitor has a stunning view of the river. Millingen, in the remarkable polder landscape with its many pools, groves and views of the rivers, is a terrific starting point for cycling and walking tours. Boat tour company “de Duffelt” offers the possibility to make round trips on the river. 

Because train traffic and arterial roads do not exist here, you can still enjoy real peace and quiet. The Millingerwaard is part of the nature reserve the “Gelderse Poort” and still offers unspoilt nature with unique flora and fauna. In the Millinger Theetuin [Teagarden] it is nice to rest after a walk or a cycling tour.
The name of Millingen aan de Rijn suggests that since ancient times the village has strongly been bound to the river. The Romans already discovered the many advantages of this region. Along the northern border of their Imperium Romanum in the first century A.D. they built a number of fortifications and watch towers to guard their territory. This border is also known by the Latin term “limes”. In the course of the Middle Ages at many limes locations settlements came into being which grew into villages and cities. The different parts of the Roman Empire were connected by a network of well-kept paved roads. The Heerbaan in Millingen was part of that.

Nowadays Millingen is a village which numbers approximately six thousand residents. A village with a blooming club life. A village with has everything and is appealing to day trippers but also for a stay at a hotel, bed-and-breakfast or a mini campsite. A village which is proud of its Roman past but also looks towards the future. A village which is lively but also offers peace and space.
