The municipality of Lingewaard
Lingewaard is definitely worth a visit!
Lingewaard is a municipality with seven rural centres, set in a rustic environment between the dynamic cities Arnhem and Nijmegen. The centres Angeren, Bemmel, Doornenburg, Gendt, Haalderen, Huissen and Ressen are excellent places to live and work. Lingewaard is known in the Netherlands not only as a municipality with an important economic influence within the cityregion Arnhem Nijmegen, but also as a municipality situated in the tourist area of the Gelderse Poort.
Lingewaard is a beautiful starting point for cycling on the dikes and walking across the washlands along the Nederrijn, Waal and Pannerdensch Kanaal where you may come across herds of wild Galloway cattle and Koniks horses.
Each rural centre has maintained its own character and organizes annual events such as the Cherry Festival in Gendt, the Bemmel Brass band day, the Day of Huissen and the Pony market in Bemmel. The annual Four Days Marches of Nijmegen experiences a dazzling passage through Lingewaard. Typical events are the various militia (“schutterij”) and guild festivals. Another tourist attraction is the authentic medieval castle “De Doornenburg” with an actual moat, which you definitely must visit. New future attractions are the horticultural information centre “Mea Vota” and the Fortress Pannerden.
An important economic factor in Lingewaard is the greenhouse horticulture district Bergerden, centrally located between the A325 and the A15, where by means of innovative horticultural developments not only crops are grown, but also energy is generated.
In Lingewaard and surroundings a 1500 hectare recreation and nature park “Park Lingezegen” will be developing between the Rhine and the Wall over the next fifteen years, making Lingewaard even more interesting for a day out. The first cycling and walking tours, such as the “Ommetje Doornik” have already been mapped out.
A visit to Lingewaard is definitely worth your while!
