The municipality of Heumen
The municipality of Heumen in its current form was created in 1980 and consists of the villages of Nederasselt, Overasselt, Heumen and Malden. It is not only spread along the River Maas (Heumen, Overasselt en Nederasselt) but also along the busy water route of the Maas-Waal channel (Malden). Heumen has various industrial estates: Molenhoek in Nederasselt; Hoge Brug, Ambachtsweg and Sluisweg in Malden; and in Overasselt there is one under construction.
The municipality has a wealth of beautiful walking and cycling routes. To name but a few: the Overasseltse Vennen, the forelands of the river Maas near Overasselt and Nederasselt, Heumensbos, and Broekbos with its special flowers and plants, located between Overasselt and Nederasselt. And of course Heumensoord, which dates back to the days of the Roman Empire. The vastness of this area makes it especially suitable for running, walking and cycling routes that may include other municipalities as well.
Heumensoord has an airport that belongs to gliding club NijAC, a Nijmegen-based club on Heumen’s soil. Another example of a Nijmegen-based club on Heumen’s soil is hockey club Union; the hockey grounds are situated in sports park De Kluis on the very edge of the municipality. These are but two examples of a wide variety of sports clubs located within the municipality.
Heumen also has a lot to offer when it comes to culture: socio-cultural centre Maldenstijn in Malden has an annual programme full of cabaret, dance and music performances. Since a couple of years, Malden has its very own Pleinfeest, a party on the green. Then there is the Jac Maris Museum, where the well-known Dutch visual artist lived and worked, and the accordion museum De Muse. The modernised shopping mall and adjoining entertainment venues have become a real regional attraction. Heumen is a municipality where you can enjoy living, working as well as relaxing.
