The area of Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region is almost equal in size to Arnhem Nijmegen City Region.
Under the newly amended Dutch Joint Arrangements Act (WGR-plus), a City Region means a public body in which local authorities of an urban area work together to carry out statutory duties. City Regions must improve the regional coordination for living, working, traffic and transport in the urban areas.
Arnhem Nijmegen City Region has an annual budget of around €70 million to carry out these duties. A large part of this money goes to traffic and transport, the remainder goes to living, working or spatial development. A tiny portion is intended for operational management.
Arnhem Nijmegen City Region receives an annual amount of €66 million from the Dutch State. The twenty municipalities in Arnhem Nijmegen Cool Region contribute €2.25 million; i.e. €3.15 per inhabitant per year.
